THE voyage
The maritime network was the original internet, connecting people, languages and ideas in the first worldwide web. Arka Kinari revives maritime trade-routes with culture as the cargo, not in nostalgia for what once was, but in anticipation for the future we must create. Launched in 2019 with a voyage across the Atlantic, Caribbean and Pacific, Arka Kinari now tours her home waters of the Indonesian archipelago, docking everywhere from industrial ports to stilt villages, welcomed by everyone from sultans to street artists.
LIVE SLOW ACT FAST 2019-2020 DELIVERY & TEST PERFORMANCES Ten test performances, in twenty nations and thirty thousand nautical miles with nearly zero emissions.
2020-2023 SLOW TOURING INDONESIA Making performances in unlikely places. Making waves with workshops on renewable energies and sailing skills. Making an example of life beyond fossil fuels.
2024 OCEANIA Australian festivals from the tropics to Tasmania, followed by Timor Leste.
2025 NUSANTARA FROM EAST TO WEST A farewell to the islands of Indonesia, and hello to the neighbors of Singapore and Malaysia.
2026 INDIAN OCEAN & RED SEA Following the original trade winds, calling at Sri Lanka, India, Yemen, Sudan and Egypt
2027 MEDITERRANEAN SEA Down the Adriatic and circling the western basin, stopping in ports of Croatia, Italia, Malta, France and Spain. Reversing colonialism, this ship comes from the east, and comes to share.
“At sea, everyone takes turns doing the necessary chores. During the dayshifts they steer the ship and carry out any sailing manoeuvres, enter data into the logbook (…) and then at night the only responsibility is to keep to the course and look out for hazards. The Arka Kinari doesn't stop.” - BBC

Belitong, Sumatera ID | Artivism at Sea
